Questions tow operators ask about marketing
Straight answers for towing company owners on reviews, Google Ads, 24-hour listings, motor club work, answering speed, the benchmark data and the free 14-day trial.
How many Google reviews does a towing company need?
More than the two companies you appear beside in the map pack. Across 23,074 towing listings the median is 31 reviews and 27.1% have fewer than 10. The operators holding the top of a real metro are usually past 100, which is where 23.9% of the industry sits. Because roadside customers are stressed, your ask has to happen at drop-off, not by email that night. The scripts are in the reviews guide.
Why is my star rating lower than other trades?
Because a large share of towing volume is involuntary. The average rating across the dataset is 4.4 stars and 20.5% of towing companies sit below 4.0, which is far worse than most home service trades. Impounds, private property tows and repossessions generate one-star reviews from people who never chose you. The only real defense is enough retail reviews to outweigh them, and a calm public reply on every negative one.
Should I list my company as open 24 hours?
Only if a human answers at 3 a.m. 50.7% of towing companies claim 24-hour hours, and a large share of them go to voicemail overnight. A false 24-hour listing gets you the call and then a one-star review. If you run daytime dispatch and an on-call driver, set real hours, list the after-hours line in your profile description, and cover the gap with text-back. See the profile guide.
Is Google Ads or Facebook better for towing?
Google, by a wide margin, for anything urgent. A tow is pure emergency intent: somebody types "tow truck near me" and calls within 90 seconds. Nobody scrolls Instagram deciding who to call for a breakdown. Meta earns its place for the non-urgent lines you also sell, like junk car buying, equipment hauling, long-distance transport and impound release awareness. Details in the Google Ads guide and the Meta guide.
What does a retail tow call cost on Google Ads?
In most US metros, $18 to $60 per call, with dense city emergency terms and heavy duty terms running higher. Operators who lose money on Google Ads almost always run broad match on "towing" across a 40-mile radius with no call tracking. Tight radius, phrase and exact match on service terms, a schedule that matches the hours you actually answer, and call recording turn it around faster than any bid change.
Should I chase motor club and police rotation work or retail calls?
Both, but they are different businesses. Motor club and rotation work fill the schedule at a fixed, low rate and do not need marketing at all. Retail calls pay two to four times more per hook and are the only calls marketing can create. The practical answer for most yards is to keep the contract work as the floor and spend every marketing dollar on retail, since that is the only place spend converts into margin.
What is a missed call actually worth to a towing company?
The full ticket, every time. Nobody stranded on a shoulder waits for a call back. Put your own average tow price and monthly call volume in the calculator and it will show the monthly number. For most single-yard operators the missed calls are worth more than the entire marketing budget being argued over, which is why answering comes before advertising.
How do I show up when someone asks ChatGPT for a tow truck?
Answer engines lean on the same signals Google does plus clean, plain text they can quote. That means a complete Google profile, one consistent name, address and phone everywhere, a website that states in sentences which services you run and which towns you cover, reviews that name specific jobs, and a few mentions on local sites and news pages. The steps are in the AI search guide.
Do I need a website if my Google profile brings the calls?
The data argues yes. Towing companies with a website linked have a median of 47 reviews; those without have 17. 36.7% of the industry has no site at all. A website is not causing the reviews, but it is where Google, the AI answer engines and a nervous caller confirm you are a real company with real hours. Five fast pages beat nothing by a mile.
Is the benchmark data trustworthy?
It is public data collected at scale, so it is good to within a point or two, not to the decimal. Listings are deduplicated by Google place and refreshed monthly. Some profiles in the set are repair shops and body shops that also run a wrecker, which is normal for the category. Google does not publish any of this itself. The method is described on the about page.
Where does the benchmark data come from?
Public Google Business Profile listings, found through Google Maps searches for towing companies in every state. We keep only the public business fields, never reviewer names or personal information, and we recompute the whole report each month so the percentages on this site match the current market.
What is included in the free 14-day trial?
Any one service, or several at once: Google Ads management, Meta ads, AI search optimization, local SEO and Google profile work, website design, social media management, review generation, missed-call text-back and follow-up, email and SMS, bookkeeping, and cold-call appointment setting. Setup, day-to-day management and reporting are all included. If you choose to run ads, the spend paid to Google or Meta is yours and stays in your account.
What happens after the 14 days?
You choose. Keep the service at the monthly price quoted before the trial started, switch to a different one, or stop. Nothing renews on its own, nothing is charged during the trial, and anything built during it, the profile work, the landing pages, the review system, stays in your accounts either way.
Do I need to put a card down?
No. There is no card on file at any point during the trial. What is needed is access to the accounts involved, your Google Business Profile among them, and about 20 minutes on a setup call. Most services are live within 48 hours of that call. Start on the free trial page or text (385) 832-6175.
